Turn on auto-scaling in MRTG

Can somebody help me out? We have several VPN's to remote offices and we use MRTG to monitor the bandwidth usage on them. There's a MaxBytes setting - I read somewhere this is the maximum that the graph will show - so ideally should this be set to the max bandwidth speed of the connection? Also, does this need to be manually entered in the mrtg.cfg file or should it be configured in the device somewhere and retrieved by mrtg? I want to do this because at the moment, one of our offices looks (at a quick glance) that it's using all it's bandwdith - but this is just because their utilization has never gone very high so the graph always pretty much looks the same. So I think I need to turn on auto-scaling. How do I do this, and is it on a "per-device" basis or is it just turned on once for all devices?
