For a software upgrade on a remote server we want to break the mirror (RAID 1). Can we do this remotely and save the data, in case we need to rollback?
We have to do an application upgrade, and later on probably a rollback. Several servers are involved and we wanted a quick way to rollback, so preferably no backup/restore.
All windows machines are compaq dl380, with 2 disks mirrored via the integrated smart array controller. Just one array. All compaq servers have all the compaq agents and tools on them (incl array config util). For now we did a 'freeze' on the application chain and the removed one of the disks from all machines. Because the servers aren't nearby, we need someone on location to do the removing and adding. I wondered if we could break the mirror with data preservation without physically removing the disks.
Well, with software raid you can do it.When you break mirror you don't lose data. But when you reestablished mirror syncronization will occure and data will be updated from master disk. With hardware raid you must have someone
beside server to cofigure ACU upon bootin' server.Try to start ACU from Smart start in windows.I can't remember is it posibble. If you can configure RAID in windows than there are few apps that could allow you to remotly do that.
Just break mirror an if you dont like upgraded application
promote other disk to be master in mirror and than it wiil replicate itself(old app) to test disk and you will get rollback with minimum downtime.Biggest problem is 'cause in compaq servers it is allways recomended to create raid before installing operating system. If you do it when disk has OS installed you risk problems like freezeing of Windows and similar.
