Hi

I apologise first off as I hope I can describe this in such a way you can understand.

We are using Microsoft Office 2003 (Word) and for some unknown reason on a new document, there are four "L" shaped charcters that have appeared in each corner of the document and I cannot for the like of me, find out what they are or where the setting is to turn them off.

They are lined up with page indent's so I am guessing it is something to do with them.

Also, in the Tools > options settings, a tab called "Asian Typography" has appeared.

Any suggestions guys?

Thank you

Two options (or may be both)

[tab]1.[tab]In Word go to Tools; Options.
[tab] [tab]In the View tab, under Print and Web Layout options, clear the Text boundaries check box if selected.

[tab]2.[tab]Clear all the Asian languages from the Enabled languages list.
[tab] [tab]Go to Start; All Programs; Microsoft Office; Microsoft Office Tools, and Microsoft Office 2003 Language Settings.
[tab] [tab]In the Enabled languages list, select and remove all the languages that you do not use except English

A man has only two choices: He can be right or he can be happy.

Hi

I have tried the suggestion this morning and noticed that the Text boundaries check box was already unchecked and the only enabled language was english.

Any other suggestions guys?

Check 'View' - do you have a different setting?

Select the whole document - Ctrl-A - and use Tools > Languages to set everything to English.

Is it just the one document? If so, you could start a new document and transfer the text using Edit > Paste Special > Text. This will of course clear all of the useful formatting, as well as the stuff you don't want.

The second suggestion posted by xlhelp (which you seem to have missed) is the one: remove all support for Asian languages.

Enjoy,
Tony

We want to help you; help us to do it by reading this: Before you ask a question.

I'm working (slowly) on my own website

The only enabled languages as mentioned are English UK

Select the whole document - Ctrl-A - and use Tools > Languages to set everything to English
This is set to English

If I start a new document, the four corners of the document have the L shape so copying and pasting doesn't make any difference.

I did check the
...select and remove all the languages
and this has made no difference.

I am convinced that a button has been accidently pressed or some checkbox has been checked similar to Show/Hide.

We shall keep looking.

Thank you for the posts.

If you have any Asian fonts installed on your machine, the margin corners will appear. Don't worry about them: they don't print.

Hi xwb

Thank you for the post. I did try a print of the document and you are right, they dont print. It's just annoying because I cant turn off the margin markers (or whatever they may be).

Ok, for the benefit of those who ever have this problem again here is a way to resolve this very annoying issue:

Hold down the CTRL key and start Word (Not tried this in any other version except 2003)
You will be asked to confirm you want to start in safe mode (Go for it)
Once the new page has loaded, you will notice that the "Crop marks" (now I know what they are) have gone.
Save this new document as a "Word template" but call it Normal2 (as there is already a Normal.dot file
Once saved navigate to folder: Documents and Settings>yourprofile>Application Data>Microsoft>Templates and delete Normal.dot then rename Normal2.dot to Normal.dot

The next time you start Word - Hey Presto!

It worked for me,

Thanks to those who posted on this thread.
