Turn off fonts in fontlist

Please does anyone know how to turn off fonts that i don't use in Indesign.
Now i have this list of maybe 50 fonts which makes it annoying to look up a font.

...in mac os x, fonts are stored in various locations that your applications will look at to load what it finds when you start up your programs...

...there is a great free font manager you can try...

System Domain - System/Library/Fonts
Local Domain - Library/Fonts
User Domain - Users/[name]/Library/Fonts
Classic Domain(Mac OS 9) - System Folder/Fonts
Network Domain - Network/Library/Fonts
Application Fonts - Library/Application Support

...with fontexplorer, there is a tool built in that will clean out your font locations, leaving those that were installed by your system install...

...the font hierachy is as follows, it is good practice not to have duplicate fonts across the system, if there are they will be opened from the following locations in this order:

1. Library/Application Support
2. Users/[name]/Library/Fonts
3. Library/Fonts
4. Network/Library/Fonts
5. System/Library/Fonts
6. Classic Domain(Mac OS 9)/System Folder/Fonts

...be careful manually removing fonts from the System/Library/Fonts area, as essentila fonts are stored for system stability, best to leave well alone...

...fonts used for you adobe applications and no other application are stored here:

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts

...with the adobe fonts:

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts

Do not remove the folder called "Reqrd" and it's containing fonts, otherwise this will cause you problems...

...all other fonts in the "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts" can be removed or stored elsewhere.

One thing to add to Apepp's answer: If you know what fonts you'll be using in the ID document, you can make a simple character style with that font and name it with the font name. Then, instead of using the font menu or character menu, you can just use your character style. Save a lot of scrolling.

...yes, you can remove those fonts ok, the ones you have to be careful with are:

System/Library/Fonts (Used by your operating system)

/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts

Do not remove the folder called "Reqrd" and it's containing fonts, otherwise this will cause you problems...

...all other fonts in the "/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Fonts" can be removed or stored elsewhere.

...if you have multiple users on your machine, you will need an admin password to remove fonts from some areas...

I noticed a couple of references to the font "Hiragino Mincho Gothic Pro W3."
I don't think there is such a font. I know it is shown in the Extensis Manual: Best Practicies Guide, but they admit it is probably a mistake (the second one I found in this manuak).
It does not appear in the Mac OS X 10.4 Font List on Apple's web site, nor is it installed by 10.4.
There is a font called "Hiragino Mincho Pro W3" which is what seems to have Extensis confused.
