when I type char in places where I am not supposed to on a x-client terminal, the beep sound is always there. It has nothing to do with windows sound control.

Is there a command like stty to shut it up? Thanks

I believe it's an option in your terminal program. If you are typing in an editor (example [tt]vi[/tt]) and it beeps when you get to the right margin, it's a terminal option.

Open a terminal window. Select the menu option "Options", then "Global...". Then look for "Bell Control". You can turn it off there.
