I am new to the world of PDA's and as I use Outlook at work for my appointments, contacts, etc, I thought I could use a Palm to ease my job. I bought a Palm Tungsten E because apparently it synched "flawlessly" with Outlook.

Well I am not able to do it. First of all as we use a Win2000 network at work, I was not able to install the Palm Sw from my network user, not even after granting it full administrator rights on the local machine. Second, I installed from the Administrator user, but I cannot use it from any other user. And third I tried to use at the Administrator the .pst files from my network user which are the ones I really need to synch with, again, complete failure.

Any idea? Or else I will have to return the Palm and go to a Pocket PC.

Thanks in advance

1. The Palm Desktop software *must* be installed with local admin rights. After the installation is complets, admin rights may be taken away from the user. In other words, it takes admin rights to install, but not to run the application.

2. You'll have to install the Palm Desktop software for each user that logs into the machine. If you install while logged in as admin, only the admin user will be able to use the software. This is on purpose, and provides great flexibility from one user to another. On user can sync with Outlook, while another syncs with Lotus Notes, and yet another with the Palm Desktop software itself.

3. You'll be able to use Chapura, Intellisync, or other 3rd party application (I think the Tungsten E ships with Chapura?) to sync with Outlook. I talk to people everyday that sync with Outlook, and have done it myself, so know it works well.

I hope this helps

Thank you for your reply, although I was already aware of what you are telling me. The first thing I did was try to install Palm SW logged as my user (which has full admin rights on the local machine) but if fails. I believe the problem must be that the user is a network user with a network domain and somehow that makes the installation program crash. So the first problem is why can't I install the SW as a network user with full local admin rights? I can install any other software I want to install from this user.

To the 3rd party application suggestions, I have been thinking about it, but I am afraid I would have the same problem (Chapura requires admin rights also) and I do not want to spend money again on something which does not work for me.

Thank you again

How does the installation crash? Is there a specific error message?

I contacted Palm support and they told me that to do what I wanted I needed network administrator rights! My IT department refused to do it. So I have installed it as a local user and I change user twice a day to sync with Outlook. Not great, but at leat I can use it!

Thanks for your interest!

By the way, have you heard anything about Tungsten E battery duration being quite low? After using it for 3 hours or so (continuos) for reading eBooks or playing games the battery is almost dead!
