Hi Guys,

I am now working for a long time with Legato aka EMC² Networker and i was wondering if there is a Solution to Backup small Files (about 20000000 )with about 1~5KB with good Performance.
Right now i´m doing Backup to Disk and the Average Speed is about 50 - 70 KB/s.

I know from "uasm" that there is an option for Bigfiles (bigasm)...
Does somebody know if there is an option for such small Files like mine.
I know it would be performing much better wich "RAW" Device Backup, but then i have issues with the Restore, cause i can´t restore a single File.

Any Ideas would be great appreciated.

Thanks an Regards,
Andrew

Sounds like a scenario for NDMP and/or snapshot technology (SnapImage & PowerSnap).

Snapshots or raw-device backup is the best solution concerning backup performance.
Looking for comfortable restores you can try to specify more savesets.
Eg. if your x-million files are on volume E:\ (windows) or /home you dont use Saveset All or E:\ but
specify E:\dir1 .. E:dirn if applicable.
Now tune your clients paralelism attribute.

I would prefer savepnpc as the backup command and umount the volume before doing a raw Device Backup.
With Unix/linux unmounting is trivial (umount), with windows the command is mountvol E: /d
with mountvol <guid-of the volume> E:\ you can remount it in a postscript.

Thanks for your Informations.
I was talking to a EMC Sales Representitive and he told me about Snapeimage. I will try it with an Eval Version to see how it works.
RAW Device Backup is nearly impossible because it´s production Server and no chance to unmount the Volume.
