Hello All,

I have Netware OES 6.5Sp2 running on my servers. In the memory area I click on Tune Logical Address Space and I am taken to a screen that shows me memory stats for before and after if I click on the change link.

I notice though that it tells me that if I do this I need to add the following to my startup. This is what it reads exactly below:

Restart the server after making the changes using the following command:

server -u789000000

If you want this change to be permanent, insert this command in the appropriate configuration file.

Caution:
The recommended changes are for the current server only. After changing parameters, you need to let the server run for a while to adjust to the services being run with the new settings.

Ok what file do I put that into? Is it really neccessary?

I have 2 gig on these servers and the one I pulled this one from only has 363MB available for the server. Is it me? Or does OES 6.5sp2 use a lot more memory?

Anyway any help would be appreciated. The state has a new software we need to install on our server for testing, but it needs 512 of Available ram.

Thanks

Hey I was just up in Idaho and was going to stop and say hi, but I hadn't seen you around for a while so I wasn't sure if you were still there at the school...

Anyway..

It's not that OES takes a lot of memory, it just uses it differently and reports differently than what you may have been used to seeing on previous servers.

The configuration file it is talking about is C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and the line would be something like this:

server -u789000000 (Instead of just SERVER)

Are you actually having memory problems? What kind of symptoms? Is the server crashing? I have found that with SP5, it's very rare to have to actually make that specific change.

There are other tweaks that DO make a big difference but that isn't one of them.

Hey Marvin,

Yeah I am still here. Probably retire here unless I can find something better that pays better, but i'm dreamin.

Anyway have you seen servers use almost 3/4's of thier memory to run?? I mean with 2 gig and all I have left is almost 400MB left?

Anyway I was hoping that would help free up memory on the system for this new testing software but if not ok.

I also may remove some of the modules I am not really using like Quickfinder, and a few others that are not really needed and were installed with hopes of using them but haven't even touched them at all. I would love to know how to stop Wake on Lan from starting up as well.

Anyway enough ranting. What are some of the tweaks that can help? Is there a article on it somewhere or is it one of those things that you learn as you go?

Well yeah I am still here if you are ever in the area stop by. If I am not in my office I am usually at one of the schools.

Thanks for the info oh yeah and Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Seeing only 400MB left is not bad. The server is using the memory for caching etc. You shouldn't worry too much unless you are actually having either performance or stability problems.

The TID you want to refer to is here:

The main thing is the TSAFS and the DS Cache (Steps 2 and 3). Those are the biggest contributors.

Hey Marv,

Well just it is weird on our servers. One is lower on memory than another server. So just looking for ways to streamline them. Also my Groupwise box abended twice since it has been up for a year and part of it was memory looks like.

Well thanks for the info and I will try those listed in the TID. And if you are ever in the area stop in and say Hi.
