We are looking at implementing a TSM solution for a large number of wintel and Unix servers 300+. As we are looking at consolidating a large amount of these servers onto a SAN environment, I would like some advice on deployment of TSM.

The recommendation we have had, is to install TSM and utilise the network LAN for backup traffic. (even for SAN nodes). The tape drive and TSM server would be LAN attached, and would in a sense mean that all SAN data would be pushed across the local LAN.

I would like to know if there are any reasons/limitations as to why TSM couldn't be used in a SAN environment and utilise the SAN fabric rather than the network for the majority of the data. (we are looking over the next couple of years to consolidate a large proportion of the data onto a SAN environment and as such it would make more sense to attach the tape drive directly into the SAN etc).

Can TSM handle both LAN and SAN backups.. ie. a mixed mode of operation with legacy systems backing up over the network.

I would also like to know of any issues regarding restores, as a lot of the major 'high' availability systems would be SAN connected, and as such would restores during the day be an issue if TSM is lan based. (also any restrictions if multiple systems need restoring.. ie after a power down etc..?)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

TSM can be used with a SAN. This is called SAN Managed Systems. There are no implications and very easy to install.
