Trying to use ODBC with Pervasive

We were supplied with these directions:
1.Control Panel-->Administrative Tools-->Data Sources(ODBC)
2.User DSN tab
3.Add
4.Select Pervasive ODBC Engine Interface.
5.Enter a Data Source Name. (anything)
6.Click on Create
7.Enter a Database Name. (anything)
8.Browse to the Dictionary Location...

I completed 1-7, but could go no farther because this error appears:

"Logon: Failed to connect to server. Unable to connect to the specified remote server. Verify that all of the communication components are located on the remote server and that there are available sessions and try again. Look in pvsw.log for details."

Any suggestions?

When we used ODBC to connect with our Informix database system, we had to make additions to the etc/hosts file and the services file. Our Pervasive instructions mentioned neither of these. I looked in the etc/hosts file and the only listing is localhost.

The instructions you have assume that the server is visible by name, either through SPX or through DNS on a TCP network. If you need to use the HOSTS file normally, I can assume that this is not true.

Therefore, you *do* need to set up your HOSTS file to contain a reference to the target server. You should be OK at that point.

If you are using Pervasive Client DSN setup, there are three, areas (Client Server and Data Source), so it seems to me that you have to know or assign a valid tcp address for the server and use it in the Server area and the transport to TCP first, so if you are creating a Datea Source, it should ask you for a User name and Password, and if you have the rights, you will be able to create it, an test it, after that you may assign a name to your server and use it thru DSN.
