Trying to setup a simple VPN server in XP

Hello,

I am trying to setup a VPN for playing strategy games with my home PC. The router has port range forwarding set like this:

Start: 1723 | End: 1723 | Protocol: both | Local IP of VPN Server | Enabled

Start: 500 | End: 500| Protocol: both | Local IP of VPN Server | Enabled

Start: 50 | End: 51 | Protocol: both | Local IP of VPN Server | Enabled

This seems to allow access to the server as you get "verifying username & password" when you try to connect. But then it hangs for minute and comes back with an error 721 "a connection could not be established because the remote computer did not respond" (or something to that effect).

I setup the local machine as a VPN server. ie:
Network connections>Create a new conection>setup an advanced connection>Accept incoming calls>skip LPT 1>Allow VP connections>added the user and allowed administrator>allow access & assign IP>Finish

I setup the local security policy to allow logon through terminal services and made sure the deny logon fields are clear.

I even made the VPN server PC a DMZ on the router to be sure it wasn't that.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this isn't working?

VPN Server: Windows XP Pro
Connecting PC: Windows XP Pro
Router: Linksys RT31P2
Error: 721

Open 1723, you can close 500 and 50 since the traffic will go over the tunnel and check if you enabled tunneling.
"Allow PPTP" enable/disable (should be enabled) - I think you can find it the same place where you specify if you want your router to reply to ICMP - I think it's under Misc settings.
