Trying to set Outlook as default email in XP Pro

I just upgraded my laptop and now have XP pro. Along the way I also got MSoffice 2003. I want to set Outlook as the default email client but I only see outlook express in the list of possible defaults. I did the phone registration not the web registration because outlook wouldn't see the web during the wizard (??). I see it in IE and can manually send email.
I'm a little baffled.
Any ideas?
