Hi everyone,

I am trying to restore an exchange mailbox from my backup tape. However the restore fails. In the activity log the following error is displayed

- 8601 failed to connect to agent

I am using Brightstor Arcserve Backup r11.1 I know my backup agent RPC service is running because I can successfully backup the mailstore.

In the restore process a "session name and password" dialog box pops up. In here I can edit the username and password of the tape session. I clicked ok at this point because I did not set any session name and password.

Please assist
thanks
Adesh

Hi speshalyst,

The following is the details from the activity log.

Error 8601
8601 Failed to connect agent. (AGENT=agent name, EC=error message/code)

Module:

Reason:

BrightStor ARCserve Backup may have failed to connect to the Backup Agent for a number of reasons:

The Backup Agent RPC Server service is not running on the target server.

The Backup Agent Remote Service is not running on the target server (Backup Agent for Microsoft SQL).

The target database server instance may be stopped or inaccessible.

The target server may be unreachable over the network.

Machine authentication failure may have occurred for any of the following reasons:

Incorrect user name or password (Windows error 1326).

Specified user does not have sufficient rights to perform a backup (Windows error 1385).

The user name or password is missing (Windows error 87).

The Backup Agent Remote Service and/or the Backup Agent RPC Server service is running as a user that does not have sufficient privileges to perform a Windows login (Windows error 1314).

A failure to load the agent DLL into memory may have occurred for any of the following reasons:

Insufficient memory available.

The Backup Agent DLL doesn't exist in the agent home directory.

The DLL path is incorrect in the registry.

Action:

Windows Error 1326 or 87

Windows Error 1385
Check that the user specified either has the "Backup files & Directories" right in the Local Security Policies of the database server machine, or is a member of a group which has this right. This right is typically held by the Administrators and Backup Operators groups.

Windows Error 1314
In the control panel, under Services (Windows NT) or Administrative Tools, Services (Windows 2000, XP, or ), check that the Backup Agent RPC Server service and the Backup Agent Remote Service (Backup Agent for Microsoft SQL) are running as "LocalSystem", or as a user that is a member of the Backup Operators group.

If the Backup Agent RPC Server service and/or Backup Agent Remote Service is running as a user that is a member of the Backup Operators group, make sure that the Backup Operators group has the "Act as part of the Operating System" right in the Local Security Policies of the database server computer.

No, that is the error explanation from the online-help file, what we are looking for is the actual error from your activity log.

Oh sorry...that would be the following then

E8601 02/20/2006 05:46:13 PM 368 Failed to connect agent. (AGENT=\\EXCHANGE\dbaxchg2, EC=Windows Error 1326: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.)

When you submit the job the popup will ask for security for both the machine (filesystem) and the dbagent. Ensure you fill security information for both tabs. If you leave it as default, it will fail with the exact error you reported.

Hi Vschumpy,

I entered the relavent usernames and passwords the popup was asking and it seemed I was accessing the tape, but then this error popped up.

E8605 02/21/2006 12:05:55 PM 3723 Failed to start restore. (DBNAME=Individual Mailboxes\Username\Calendar, EC=EXCHANGE:Backup Agent Error -- (354) "Failed to find the object information".)

Try creating and initialising the mailbox to restore to first.

The user account for the mailbox I am trying to restore was deleted. So I followed your instructions and recreated created the account and send a mail to the mailbox to initialise it. Then I tried the restore process again, but I am still getting the same error.

E8605 02/21/2006 03:34:53 PM 378 3 Failed to start restore. (DBNAME=Individual Mailboxes\<user's name>\Calendar, EC=< My exchange server>:Backup Agent Error -- (354) "Failed to find the object information".)

Any other sugestions? :(

Ensure that you select the destination mailbox you created and initialised, and DO NOT select restore to original destination.
