trying to print within Report Writer - print button greyed out

Do you mean you are modifying reports in Report Writer and trying to test them directly in Report Writer, without going back into GP?
If so, in my experience, some reports will have this ability, but many will not, and you need to test them directly in GP. I do not know the 'official' reason for this, but it may depend on the complexity of the report and/or whether or not it needs temp tables.
