trying to make object visible for entire detail section

I am using Crystal Reports 8.

I am trying to make a table where each entry is numbered, and have the numbers set on a black background. This is all fine, except that I want the background to extend all the way down the table (the whole details section) even when there isn't a record entry on that line. How do I do this? Using a special field with a black background only extends the black "bar" as far down as the records go.

What does an entry mean?

Your terminology confuses me, try posting example data and expected output.
