Setup is....

Asus K8N Mobo
40GB IDE HDD
200GB SATA HDD (both maxtor)

Tried installing these like I would with two IDE drives, hasnt worked at all (either installs ok and then crashes on windows boot screen, the one with the windows logo and the loading bar, or crashes in windows setup menu on the 'disk checking' stage)

Ive asked around and been told I need to install SATA drivers before I install windows but others have said thats only for RAID and also I cannot find these alusive SATA drives which were meant to be on the motherboard disk which is non-existant.

Anybody here actually know what they are talking about and can help??

Would be muuuuch apreciated :)

Which O/S are you using?
What is the exact status of both HD's, i.e., are they recognized in BIOS, and are they both partitioned and formatted?
Will one HD be bootable and the other used for storage, or will both be bootable?
You will need to install the drivers for the SATA HD. It should have been supplied with a driver floppy. If not, then you can get the drivers from the HD manuf's site.

You will need the SATA drives if you are installing a SATA hard drive. Then you will need to re-install the OS. If it's Win2k or newer, you will need to press the F6 key during file copy (You will see a message at the bottom of the screen). Insert the floppy when asked, choose the OS, and follow the on screen prompts.

You say you've installed windows (xp?) to both drives with no problem - so presumably this mobo must be one of the few which XP doesn't need SATA drivers for (as from your post you obviously didn't use them to install to SATA drive).

Tried installing these like I would with two IDE drives, hasnt worked at all (either installs ok and then crashes on windows boot screen
.

What exactly does this mean? Have you installed windows to one drive on its own in the machine, AND had it running successfully, or does it always fail when first booting? Or have you always had both drives present?

(there's absolutely no reason not to have both - in fact I'm writing this on a machine with Asus mobo with one SATA and one IDE drive).

I think we first need to establish exactly which drive you are installing your operating system on? PATA or SATA (40gig or 250gig)
It would make more sense if starting from scratch to install the OS on the faster SATA drive
It would seem, by what you have written, that your SATA drive doesn't need third party SATA drivers loading at F6, the reason I say this is because the system actually reports "no hard drive detected" if the SATA hasn't been picked up (just before it copies OS files)

Anyway, what I would do would be to add the older 40gig later, after the OS is installed on the SATA drive.

Other thing is, this "crashes on Windows boot screen" sounds more like a memory problem to me.
Try just one good module, swap around.

Ok, answers to your questions....

OS is windows XP pro
Both are present in the BIOS as 1st master and 4th master
Status of drives is that both are formatted, the 40gb IDE hdd has the XP installed on it, the 200GB sata is empty.
The SATA was going to be the OS HDD but windows installer crashes with that drive plugged in so at present OS is on 40gb hdd, it doesnt matter too much which its on as long as the computer will boot with both.
Have installed OS with just the IDE drive installed, computer runs fine like that... until you plug in the SATA.

I tried last night with the creation of an f6 disk using the mobo disk that I had from a K8N based machine that i built 6months ago, installed windows fine, booted fine after install. Then when rebooting, crashes on a blank screen just after the windows loading screen. If SATA is pulled, the pc boots fine, plug sata back in and boots fine, boot a SECOND time with sata and it crashes on that screen. any idea?

btw, the OS is XP pro sp2 edition, just thought you may need to know! :D

Have you looked on the Asus website to see if this problem is fixed with a newer bios? I would say, if you are comfortable flashing a bios then update anyway just to be sure.

Also have you tried my first suggestion? install the O/S on the SATA drive, THEN add the older IDE (but make sure the SATA is set first in the boot sequence)

OK, I tried some sutff like partitioning into 2x 100gig, did that, had to reboot for the windows install (you know the drill) and when rebooted, didnt go into the next stage, was back at square one, now when i try and install windows on the sata, it freezes on the checking disk stage right after you choose "press enter to install xp"

I have the same mobo on this pc btw with SATA and i didnt do any buggering around with updating bios,f6 disk or nethin!

I also tried installing windows on the sata without the IDE in the equasion, no luck.

any ideas?!?!?

The SATA HD may be bad.
In a previous post you said "If SATA is pulled, the pc boots fine, plug sata back in and boots fine until it was rebooted."
If you can get the system to run again with the SATA as a Slave drive, then run the diagnostics at the Maxtor site for that drive.
