Hello all-

I have a Dell server (tower).. I have the available disk space for it and reformatted and made it an "extended partition" recommended by my Linux boot. here is the problem I am encountering...

This install disk gets me to boot: and then asks a few questions about keyboard etc, all seems fine until it asks for the installation file location.. This server does not have a floppy disk but the cd media is installed in a non common IDE PLDS DVD ROM DH-16D 35 device (this detail came from Windows initially in device manager. Well, it is not a choice from the Linux device gui options and even if I could place the driver for this cd/dvd rom drive on floppy, this server does not have a floppy. So, am I screwed here? Can I somehow issue a linux command specifying the above mentioned info and have it use that info to install linux..

I guess I don't understand if the boot: parameter starts at boot up it must mean that linux detects this cd/dvd rom drive or else I suppose I wouldn't even get this far.. correct?

anyway, I am open to any suggestions about continuing further and would appreciate any support on this.

Thanks so much

blade

When you boot up using the DVD and get to the boot: prompt and you start your installation by pressing ENTER, do you get a text screen prompting your to verify your CD/DVD media?

Actually I have had a similar issue when installing on an IBM Netvista, couldn't read the CD... Try the following. When you get to the BOOT: prompt press F2 so the installation doesn't start automatically and type the following;

boot: linux ide=nodma

press ENTER and see if the installation will continue

hi all-

well..... I tried the nodman option, unfortunately it rendered the same results... I still get asked via the gui to either choose where the installation files are -(in my case it is the cd in the cd tray and gives me choices OR I can try to find the "drivers" on a file or disk BUT this Dell tower server does not have a floppy drive nor am i able to tell the boot process where the driver is.

I am stuck at the same point. I have a IDE PLDS DVD ROM DH-16D 35 device, but how do I let Linux know this is what I am using because the cd disk is where the cd is. I can't believe that the initial boot process gets me this far but then actually asks where the install files are when in fact boot: identified the cd in the first place or else how the heck would I have got this far... very odd!!!

thanks though

Copy all packages on a FTP server on your lan and do a network install, faster, better and replicable may times.

If I could have sex each time I reboot my server, I would definitely prefer Windoz over Linux!
