I have a client that is connecting to our Windows 2K network via a VPN. It seems to connect with the VPN fine. He can ping all the computers on the LAN. When he tries to sign on to one of them he gets a "Finder Error". It says data cannot be read or written. I am a Windows person so my knowledge of Apple is almost zero. What is a finder? What would you suggest I try?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Finder is Apple's explorer tool for retreiving anything within your computer, very useful...I have a couple of questions for you. Is the client computer connecting to another apple machine or windows 2000 server? Is he trying to retrieve files from a computer or remotely controlling the computer? Ask the client if when searching for computer resources does he specify the computer name or ip address?

He is trying to connect to a Windows 2000 server that is the domain controller. He is just trying to get files from the computer, not controll it. We have tried both the computer name and i.p. address and he says he gets the error both ways.

On my PC laptop I just connect to the VPN and then I use \\servername\sharename to access the share. It will ask for my domain username and password and then it connects fine.

He gets the error message when he enters his domain name and password that I set up in Active Directory for him. I know he has Windows permissions on the share he is trying to access.

Thanks,

Shannan

Update the UAM on the mac client should work then.

What is a UAM? The user does not know either.

Thanks,

Shannan

Ok, I had the Mac user bring his laptop in so I could see what it is doing. Here is the scenario:

We have a Windows domain. I have this one computer (a radiology computer that allows the users to view CT images) hooked into our switch but not a member of the domain. I installed a 2nd network card in this machine so we can see it from our domain. We just use \\I.P. address to access this computer. It works great.

When the Mac connects via VPN to the domain, he can ping the radiology computer and I can even connect to the other servers and clients that are members of the domain but when he signs in to the radiology computer with the administrator username and password it gives him the following error: "The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "cifs://I.P. address" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).

He has no trouble accessing the other computers that are on the domain, only this one. He can ping it, he just can't sign on. I know the username and password are good because its the Administrator username and password.

Does this help diagnosing the problem?
Thanks again for the help.

Shannan

Shannon - I assume the user is working with OS X? I have a similar set up and I don't have problems - but you may have to do some tricks.

If the user's "short" user name is different from their windows user name you need to format the URL in a special way. For example, for me to access a printer on the windows network, I type this as the URL:

smb://user:password@server/printer

Obviously, you want to replace the different keywords with the correct values. You can also try

smb://user@server/printer

smb://user@000.000.000.000/printer

Connecting to shares is the same.

Oh - wait - one special caveat. I've discovered that Macs don't understand "virtual shares" (I think that's what they are called) there are several shares on our network where subdirectories are actually links to other shares. I can't click on those directories, I have to do a "get info" to get the real share name and connect directly to it. Maybe that has a bearing on your problem?
