Hey all,

I've never tried linux but have been wanting to for awhile. Since my course load is light this term I think I'll have the time. I'm going to get a second hard drive soon and though I'd use the old one to test out linux. Does anyone know of any website which provides information? I'm willing to do a lot of reading. Thanks.

A site that is a little general with a lot of info is It has many apps as well as different distro's. Richard S. McCranie

Hey there T - firstly - go for it dude - I'm sure you'll have heaps of fun!

I'd go to google and type 'linux help info' and I'm sure you'll get a TON of sites to wade through.

I personally have found these sites to be really helpful:

Go for it!

Thanks for the reply.

wmg: Hehe.. ur reponse is giving me that extra push to go for it like "NOW" haha. I've been reading up on the red hat linux documentation but i don't see my monitor or hard drive in the compatability list. Anyhow.. I'm going to go get my hard drive today just b4 I head to class. Thanks for the links. :)

*grin* Yeah, I guess I did say that a bit eh? ;-)

Do you have a way to get a hold of the Redhat 8 images easily? If you're in NZ, I'd be happy to burn some iso's to CD for you if you're able to post me some.

The distro I use and seems to keep itself pretty up to date is Mandrake. It is also a little more user friendly from what I have heard. You can also goto the web site and do a search for you hardware and it will tell you weather it is compatable or not. Also has a gret forum to ask questions and also get support as well. Richard S. wmg: Yep.. i've got a cable connection @ home and we've got a fast dsl line @ work here (dun worry.. I'm the admin hehe). I'm actually grabbing the first one now. Thanks for the offer tho. Ohh.. and I assume you recommend redhat?

mcrakin: Yeah.. the other linux version I've most about is mandrake. I'm not sure which one I'd want to install but now that I think of it.. I'll just put both of them.. i'm getting an 80GB hd for my windows OS then use my old 20GB.. partion it into two 10GB then install both on seperate partions. :)

Thanks again for the input guys.

Kewl - yeah - I figured from your comment about reading the redhat manual that you were looking at that one.

I do use Redhat myself but Mandrake is also a very good one. I'd opine that either would be a definite good place to start in the linux world. (others may disagree of course and are quite entitled too!) ;-) We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare.
