I have a cisco 2950 24 port 10/100 with 2 GBit over copper ports (IOS ver 12.1). There are 2 manually configured Vlans (10 and 20). I have set up one of the GBit ports to trunk vlan 10 traffic. The switch on the other end of the trunk is a netgear 16 port 10/100 with 2 GBit on copper uplink ports (auto sensing crossover) The traffic does not seem to be being trunked between the switches. Is this config possible or does cisco not talk to netgear kit?
Please help someone!!

First, you have to find out if that Netgear switch supports 802.1q trunking, and you have to be using that trunking protocol on the Cisco side, since ISL is Cisco proprietary it cannot be used on other vendor's devices. If your trunk is not working, that's probably one factor. You change this by going into the interface config and typing:

switchport trunk encaps dot1q

or maybe try:

switchport trunk encaps negotiate

To see if it automatically negotiates with the netgear switch.

If I remember correctly, the 2950 only supports 802.1q encapsulation, so you actually cant even make an encapsulation statements. Also remember that protocols like VTP are cisco proprietary so don't try and use it. Create same vlans on each switch, set trunkingand you should be good to go. Good Luck!

Prizmm,

The 2950 defaults to 802.1q, but is capable of ISL. The 2900XL series defaults to ISL, and must be forced to 802.1q.

That statement is incorrect the 2950 only supports 802.1Q , it does not support ISL .
