Hello,

Can someone please set me straight on this please. I have two 2950 switches connected together using crossover cable. I have vlan 10 on switch A and vlan 10 on Switch B. I cannot ping from a machine connected to a port which is a member of Vlan 10 on switch A to a port which is member of the same Vlan on switch B. Is there any way of doing this on L2 or do I need to introduce a router into the config.

My limited knowledge of this is that if I correctly use vtp command and config vtp domain and config one of the switches to be the server and the other to be a client that I could get the two machines pinging each other because when the frame left Switch A it would add a Vlan header to the frame which would be read by Switch B without needed a router- is this correct??

Thanks

post a sh run. Also, are you certain that the hosts connected to the respective ports are in the same subnet?

I hate all Uppercase... I don't want my groups to seem angry at me all the time! =)

Is the link actually trunked? "show int trunk detail" . Make sure you created the layer 2 vlan , check by doing a "show vlan" on both sides , vlan 10 should show active on both sides . Post a show int trunk and a show vlan from both switches here so we can take a look . Also make sure on your stations that you are trying to ping you have no firewalls working whether its the windows FW or an external like zonelabs , this will block ping .

Add on : no you do not need a router to talk to stations within the same vlan as long as the trunk is working correctly.
