where do i start?! we're using a database system at work (manufacturing company)& having loads of problems with it!! we're running a win2k server, exchange 5.5 server & have 15 pc's (some on winnt, win2k & win98) the database files r held on the server & also locally on the pc's...it wont be long b4 the system becomes inoperable..can anyone tell me why we're having all these probs? is it programming errors? or how the files r located on each pc & server? where do i start? ive no permissions 2 access tables, forms etc..these r managed by the software vendors....

Good start might be what database frontend and backend are you running? Ben

its an access 2 database? is that what you mean?

OK so using Access 2 for backend on server and frontend on client machines?

When you say you''ve no permissions to access tables, forms, etc .. do you mean to open them at all, or only in design view?
Did these problems (eg permissions problem above)only start recently?
What other problems are there?

Sorry didn't pay attention to the message title.
Still a bit more detail on the problems would be good.

Well I think that you are candidate for a client-server database system. Desktop systems like access, paradox dbase etc are likely to give problems, when the network trafic increases. Also if more users try to access the database at the same time, any abnormal termination (power failure of a client) can leave uncleared locks on the server.

Some options are:
MS SQL-server (Microsoft)
Oracle
Interbase (Borland) MySQL
Informix
etc:

only the software developers have access to tables, forms, queries etc ..
access2 frontend and backend..
there are quite a lot of probs..other than listed in message title, database doesn't allow part no's to be changed once entered..cannot delete obsolete parts..access denied errors..system crashes when a particular 'browse' button is used..we're not suppose to exit the database using the window close button..errors locating files..stock going into minus figures..items can only be booked out 3 or 4 at a time, any more and the database has to be restarted..etc etc etc :-I
these probs have been here well b4 i began working here..
yes i agree that we are client/server database candidates :) but how to persuade the management - they seem to believe that they have no choice but to use this package...

Are the software developpers in house personnel?

If the application have been designed with Access2, it allready is obsolete from a software perspective.

Deleting obsolete parts, and alter part identification (key)numbers once entered, is prohibited for security reasons. Can give room to frauds.

If stock figures do not match with reality, your company data is not reliable, and you have no choice than substituting the system.
