I'm a Linux (and Solaris) sysadmin who got stuck working on an old Tru64 4.0d (Digital Unix) server. I don't know anything about Tru64, but there is a problem that I have to fix somehow. Users connect to the server via telnet, but every so often the telnet prompt will not appear, but the server is still pingable but you cannot access it over the network. The console at the server is locked up and the only way to fix it is to reboot it.

There is a core file on the root filesystem...
Code:
# file core
core: core dump, generated from 'telnetd'
Is there a patch for telnetd that I can apply? I found patch kit 9 (which I think is the latest) and tried to apply it but I think its already installed because it only gives me the option to install a single printer patch that we don't need.
Code:
- DIGITAL_UNIX_V4.0D / Printers Patches:
1) Patch 01188.00 - Various fixes for printer problems

Or you may choose one of the following options:

2) ALL of the above
3) CANCEL selections and redisplay menus
4) EXIT without installing any patches

Enter your choices or press RETURN to redisplay menus.

Choices (for example, 1 2 4-6):
Any ideas? Does anybody still use Tru64 4.0d? I know its real old and this is the first time I've ever seen it before.

Thanks,

Is there anything in the system logs? check /var/adm/messages, files under /var/adm/syslog.dated/ and output from uerf.

pete91z, I don't see anything too interesting in any of those, but here's some output from uerf from the last two crashes...

Might also be worth trying a netstat -i and checking the Ierrs and Oerrs for the network devices.

Do those event type errors mean anything to you? 199 and 110?

The error 199 looks like you may have some bad blocks on a disk but the required recovery action has taken place.
