Troubleshooting with Outline numbering in MyStyle

I have created my heading styles H1, H2, H3, and linked these to outline numbering levels 1, 2 and 3 respectively. For the first level (H1), I added Chapter before the outline number.

Unfortunately, H2 seems to behave as H1 does not exist, this is, it continues the numbering of the previous H2, even though there was meanwhile a H1. I have correctly indicated to restart numbering after Level 1. The example may make it clear:

Chapter 1 : .this is the first H1
1.1 this is the first H2
1.2 this is the second H2
1.2.1 This is the first H3 (so H3 behaves correctly)
1.2.2 this is the second H3
Chapter 2: this is the second H1
1.3 this is the first H2 after a new H1

In other words, it should give 2.1

Please your help

I know I'm ressurecting a very old thread here but I'm having exactly the same problem as '2781' and I can't see anything on thewordexpert.com that helps.

It seems as though word simply isn't recognising a level 1 heading, I have,

HEADING A (paragraph style level 1)

subheading A.1 (paragraph style level 2)

HEADING B

subheading A.2
subheading A.3

etc...

In the numbering properties for the subheading styles I have 'restart numbering after level 1' selected but it still insists on ignoring the level one I've inserted!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Jordan

i read that, no help I'm afraid.

It's got to the point now where I can get

HEADING C

subheading C.1

in peculiar formats, but as soon as I change the indentation etc for the subheading style it reverts to A.2 and I'm just about ready to pick my computer up and throw it at someone.

Then you CANNOT be following the directions I provided. Did you in fact create a new document with the styles using the method I describe? I'll do it for you...

Just list exactly how the headings should appear. It looks like:

A. Someheading name
A.1 Some 2ndlevelheading here

What do you want 3rd level to look like? What are the indents from the left margin to the text of someheading name, and from the A.1 to the some 2ndlevel...etc.

I need all the measurements and number formats you need.

Many thanks for your offer of help Anne, but as always seems to be the way with word, an idle threat of being thrown out the window seems to have sorted it out.

It now works fine with no change of method or application.

Sometimes I think it does it on purpose -- some evil subroutine -- frustrates you until the point of insanity then just sorts itself out while your back is turned.

I didn't mean to sound dismissive of your website earlier just in case it sounded that way. I found reading the article(s) very useful in helping me understand some of the underlying methodology.

thanks again,

Jordan

No problem, Jordan. I've just never had anyone tell me that it DIDN'T work.

Anyway...a couple things that will goof you up and I'm posting for the benefit of others too:

Check the styles and see if they're set to automatically update. I don't like that setting. What it does is, suppose you have body text. And you only have a few bulleted areas--not enough to justify a special bulleted style, so you bullet some body text. And ALL the body text gets bulleted. That's what that button does. Turn it off and it'll behave.

When doing outline numbering, DO NOT USE FORMAT--STYLE. Instead, use Format-Bullets and numbering. Set up all the levels at once. On the left is a little box with the levels. USE IT. Make sure the preview shows the styles the way you really want them to appear.

If you're going to have numbers like 10.111.12345, then you'd better make sure your indents are large enough to support that.

:)
Glad you got it sorted out, Jord.
