troubleshooting tips for direct cable connection

hi peeps, im trying to connect my labtop to my home computer and im having a lot of problems. When it asks me to choose which port i want to use on my laptop it has these: Parallel Cabel LPT1, Parallel Cabel LPT2, Serial Cable COM1, and Serial Cable COM2: ive pretty much tried a bunch of different combinations. How can i be sure which one 2 use. And is a serial cable a regular Phone Cord? Pleze Help
