Hi guys,
I recently ran across a faulty BCM50.
There are 2 cabinets, the main BCM50 and an expansion housing.
So far, every telephone pair on the BCM50's amphenol are working.
The 2 others amphenols connected to the expansion are dead.
I want to see if the expansion is faulty.
Thanks.

So I understand that you only have one expansion cabinet connected?. If so, then what is the module that is plugged into it please? Does the expansion module have a power lead connected?. It's usually a 17 volt dc transformer lead that is common to a number of laptop power leads.

We really need more information from you. The power leads to each BCM 50 unit are interchangable.

If it's working, then leave it alone!.

I haven't checked anything yet.
Only 1 expansion cabinet connected to the BCM50.
It was working great until a couple of days ago.
thinking short circuit?

By the way, where can I purchase one of those ethernet cables that link up the BCM50 to it's expansion?
Thanks in advance.

Here is a picture showing the connections:

The bcm just uses a standard ethernet cable - the bcm 400's and 450's have the " proprietary " cable. I see where you my have misunderstood from the other thread. There are only the 3 items that could be bad, ethernet cable, power supply or module. The amp cables do not usually go bad. If the module does not light at all I would first check the power supply. If it lights - then goes through its sync sequence - posible the ethernet cable or module.

The power supply seems to be working as I am getting a green LED on the ethernet jack on the expansion module.
However it does not flash, just a solid light.
Can I log in via Business Element Manager to check if there are issues with the module?
Thanks again.

PS: I was about to replace the amp cables... But on second thought, I think the culprit is the expansion module, maybe the card.

Can the KEY codes be expired for the module? or even totally missing after a short circuit?
As I said, the system was functioning properly before a possible power failure.

Possible , but they live in the main mod. You will need to look in Element manager. They do not expire though, but I have seen a "good" power surge scramble the data, requiring a restore from a backup to get the data back.

Are the lights working on the actual 32port card.
Pull the power lead out from the expansion unit and plug it back in again.
See if the lights come on and both should be ready green.

If they are flickering then I would go for changing the power transformer first as I have seen expansion unit not working properly because the transformer has dropped voltage

If this thing took a power hit, I would go for the power supply first. Having the green LED on doesn't guarantee the supply is putting out the correct voltage (19 volts DC)or any current at all. With the module plugged in, if you don't get any lights on it at all, it's either the main supply, the expansion cabinet itself or the module.

Basic troubleshooting should prove which part is defective.

As a long shot, looking at your picture, you don't have that little plastic clip that holds the power connector in place so make sure it's pushed all the way in. I had one guy a couple of years ago that had this same problem and he swore he checked everything.........guess what? LOL.

Will try all the solutions next time I am onsite.
Thanks.

What do you guys mean by lights?
Only light lit on the expansion module are the LED on the ethernet jack.

There are no LED by the power plug on expansion modules I believe.

From looking at the picture, I see that you have a 32 port DSM. It should have two green LED's on the actual DSM module. My guess is that they aren't working as the picture doesn't show the a green LED against the very left hand one of the one with a circle and an "i" in it.

As stated above, are the keycodes present within Element Manager and is the module enabled as both of these are areas that need to be looked at assuming that you have already checked out the expansion module power supply and checked that a standard Ethernet cable has been used.

There are a status and power leds on the module it self. Not the expansion cabinet. All that lights there is the ethernet (link light).
