I'm currently troubleshooting a 2616 set that has been in service for years.

Last Friday the display went blank, but the set still worked- I replaced it with a brand new set- everything was OK.

Monday the set went completely dead, no display, no DT.- I unplug it and plug it back in and it starts working.

Tuesday the set went dead again, I STAT the line and it shows disabled- I test it and it goes back in service. Now my feelers are starting to twitch- so I moved it to a new TN and replaced the jack.

Wednesday AM it goes dead again. I STAT the line and it shows IDLE, but it's still dead- I changed the jumper at the main frame, change the distribution cable pair to his floor and read the station wire to the jack for opens, shorts, grounds and find no problem.

Wednesday PM goes dead again. Unplugging and plugging back in doesn't work this time, so, I changed out the phone again and I've been checking on this station hourly since yesterday.

I think I've either got:
A) Something killing the phones
B) Some kind of software glitch.
C) A bad new phone.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

new phone doa, not that uncommon.. as long as all those connections are tight, a loose jumper can go open and allow the station to disable..

but the new phone changed the symptoms, seems set orientated.

Test the 2616 at TN and each Connection from there. How many Cross-Connects to Station? Check and Repunch each connection.

Swapp supposed Bad Phone with Known Good 2616, if Known Good Phone has same problem, not likely the Phone. If
original Bad Phone Good where known Good Phone was moved, problem is not Phone. Check Line Cord on supposed Bad Phone.

Best to do one thing at time to isolate Problem. You can also leave phone in SwitchRoom directily on TN to confirm problem is not a Bad Position on Card. Do one thing at time if you want to really know what the problem is.

Good Luck,

Here's something that got me with the same sort of problem... Does he by chance have a Florescent desk lamp that sits right over the phone? Had a problem with static and phone dying here but every time I went to check out the phone she was out of the office and the desk lamp was turned off. Consequently I never found a problem until one day when she was in her office and the desk lamp was turned on. Florescents inject noise into the phone which if it's bad enough can disable the phone.

We installed a UPS (the kind that takes the space of a 3-bedroom apartment) on the 19th floor. I suggested that sooner than later the low humm of the system would change to a scream and that PCs and phones on the 18th and 20th floors would have a high failure rate.

The room screams and we replace those phones and PCs more often than anywhere else.

Heck, ask John about the the equipment he has to battle...MRI, X-Ray, incontinence, etc. They all wreck phones.

You stated that the old M2616 set had been in service for years, then it may have a 27vac power supply that is powering the display. The new set may not need a power supply, remove the power supply and see if the replacement sets display still works. I have seen power supply's cause sets to go bad when the set doesn’t need external power.

i give up, he changed tn's and sets.. i still think a doa 2616, but you out guessed me..

Well, no trouble since Thursday, it must have been the first new phone. Thanks everyone.
