am trying to connect with winspm for the first time - have it installed on my pc - connected through a 355A adapter to th legend - can't even get it to connect to either of 2 systems R5 or R7 - am i missing something obvious?

What are the errors you are receiving?

If you use a palm Pilot you must close the hot synch manager as this app "controls" the comport and will not let SPM through

Check and make sure you are 'assigning' the correct comm port in your setup.

Jeepguy: How are you using a Palm Pilot to run SPM?

Pepperz - I don't think Jeepguy means he's running SPM on a Palm Pilot....

If you have a Palm Pilot, the Palm "HotSync" software runs in the background on your PC, and blocks the com port from being accessed by any other software. I found this out after my Video editing software died on my home PC.... the PC could no longer control the video camera or VCR. Turned out all I had to do was exit the Palm HotSync Manager and it came back.

Rick is right on. The app running in the background (starts up with PC by default)will "block" SPM

I am having the exact same problem. I have WinSPM - Release 7.0 running on Windows 98. The 355A/F adapter connected to a DB25/DB9 converter connected to the COM Port of a Gateway Desktop PC. I have tried connecting a regular CAT5 and a CAT5 crossover cable from the 355A/F adapter to the ADMIN Port. Site configuration – Direct (enabled), COM port (1), Baud Rate (2400). When I click on the connect button, I receive the “Failed To Connect” error message. I have not been able to connect to the system to make changes since the new processor(Processor W/CKE5)board was installed.

Are you sure your serial com port is comm port 1?
Try changing to 2 or 3. Also isn't the admin port good for 9600 baud?

Have you ever been successful connecting with that computer runing win98?

I had connect problems with win98. It turned out to be my laptop touchpad was screwing up the comm port. Also have to diable my firewall to work.

I’m sure that it is COM 1. It only has one serial port. I tried changing the port numbers but that didn’t help. The site setup instructions indicated that the baud rate should be set at 2400. It was also the default setting.

I have never connected to the board before now. This new processor was installed a few months ago. The old processor was connected to a Lucent computer running Unix. It didn’t have a RJ45 ADMIN port.

I have Windows 98 running on this computer with nothing else but WinSPM. I connected an external modem to the serial port to make sure the port was working and the modem worked. I disconnected the modem and tried to connect again. I got the same error message “Failed to Connect”.

Have you tried connecting by plugging modem into a 012 port and configuring for internal connect? To use a modem, make sure you configure the TAPI settings under the settings pull down. Follow the help pop up for win 98.
This method works just as well!

i would try with a modem too. my guess is it's either your com port or SPM 7 itself <--- shouldnt have gotten out the door. if you have an older SPM try that too.

One other "pastability" -- is the Legend you're trying to connect to a relatively recent software load, or is it an 'is' (I think that's the name)? I support one system that requires me to use DOS SPM rather than WIN SPM. Just a thought... Phonia

You can use WinSPM to connect to any version of Legend. I went back to using version 6, because version 7 seems to have some bugs. When you get the error "failed to connect" and it says check the cable, just try reconnecting again. More often than not, on the third attempt, you will connect just fine. I don't why it does this, and neither does Avaya. WinSPM 6 seems to be a lot more stable.

If you are trying a direct connect, have you tried plugging your PC into the same exact electrical outlet/circuit the PBX is plugged into? If not sometimes the difference in potential can prevent the connection. This is why ADU's were sold for this very reason ... and to overcome distance issues.

Anyone know where I can get the WinSPM program?

Thanks!
