I have a abit NV7-133 mobo with the latest bios, an adaptec 2940UW with the latest bios. Operating system is win2k SP4 and latest drivers.
My SCSI adapter has its default ID7, my Agfa T-1200 scanner has ID2 (external and terminated), my internal Plextor cd-rom (px-40ts) has ID 1 an my internal Plextor cd-wr (px-w124ts) has ID0 and is terminated. Those devices has there latest firmware installed. Latest ASPI layer also installed.
When I explore My Computer in windows with both cd devices installed, explorer hangs. Without it goes fine. I've tried to install one of them with same result, whenever it's the writer or the rom.
I've also replaced my SCSI in an other PCI slot. No changes.

Where does it go wrong? Did I make a mistake with my SCSI chain? Or is it a hardware problem?
any ideas?

thanks in advance!

Brecht.

What does CTRL-A show on boot-up?

On Control Panel under system icon, properties show that the device working?

Also it could be that the MB Bios only allow id 0 for a disk.

Change the ids to like 4/5 on those ROM Devices, and see what happens.

Before I had the ID's set to 5/6, with the same result.
But I'll change them back.
The SCSI can find the devices at boot. The bios has the default settings.
In the device manager are the devices "working".

thanks for the suggestions!

Then it has to be the cable or termination problem. Somehow the controller is getting no termination or multiple.

Does one device work by itself?

Sorry, read that you tried that. Is explorer the only thing that fails, Can you go to Command prompt, and access the device? either one.

Can you create a CD?

Have you taken the scanner off, and tried just the CD Roms?

Okay, I've changed the ID's to 4 (cdr) and 5 (cdrom).

I disabled the scanner and the writer, enabled the cdrom.
The cdrom can read and execute data cd's.
I enabled the scanner and the cdrom keeps working.
I enabled the writer and I can't read from it, but I can read from the cdrom now (but it takes time)
I disabled the scanner with same result.
Disable the cdrom doesn't change the cdr behavior.

I cant get on the cdr in dos, it keeps searching.
the cdrom does fine in dos

I've noticed that when the cdr drive is trying to read the cd, the search led from the cdrom flashes also. Like the cdr does 4 spin ups (4 searchLED flash), then the cdrom tries a search and then again the cdr.. like he is confused.

In my event log I find loads of time out messages for \Device\Scsi\aic78xx1
and also parity faults on the same.

I haven't yet got writer software installed to test the writer. (clean windows install) so I don't know if I can write a cd, I doubt it.

Could it be that my cdr has given his last breath?
I hope not :)

Now I am one step further, my scsi cdrom works, together with my scanner.
But I've noticed that I can't read audio cd's in the scsi cdrom or my ide dvdrom while data goes fine.
But that isn't related to the "scsi quest" I think.

thanks again!

Brecht.

You probably have driver issues. If the cable was bad, then you would have problems with the CDROM.

Since you have not installed the writer software, maybe
a new driver is in the install.

Otherwise Go to the plextor site and get the lastest driver for the CDROM writer.

Some more suggestions.
Try a new driver from the adaptec site.

The Plextor site says the win2k has the correct drivers.
Maybe a new firmware update is needed for the writer?

Another option is to search MS knowledge base for info.

I did update all the latest drivers and firmware on the host adaptor and the cd devices before I posted my question.
I did search the MS knowledge base but didn't exactly find a solution.
Plextor does not provide drivers because they go with w2k.
(never had problems with those drivers in the past also)

I have now Nero 6 installed as burning software. But when the writer is enabled the software hangs. The time-outs on the scsi stays.

The configuration worked perfect on my previous systems. On different operating systems.

There are troubles when the writer is installed. So I think the writer is no more.

Thanks for the help!

Brecht.
