troubles running examples with Developer edition

I've got the Developer edition of coldfusion mx. I'm new to this so I set it up as a standalone server (Ialso have apache on my win xp home box). When I try to view some of the examles I get an error. When I try to do teh tutorial that came with it and click 'verify all connections' I get staus: error. Am I doig something wrong?
Oh and as cfmx was finishing setting up it tells me: cannot connect to DNS
Whats that?
