trouble with scan disk and defrag restarting..

I ran scan disk in safe mode and still had trouble. Found several bad clusters but eventually finished in safe mode. Now having defrag restarting.

Should I run defrag in safe mode? Is there another way besides "ctrl alt del" to id and stop other prorams that are running? Is there a good and free utility that I can run to check and help the system? I ran a reg cleaner a week ago.

Normally, shutting down all programs running in the background, except Explorer and Systray, should allow ScanDisk and Defragmenter to finish the job relatively uninterrupted.

If that does not work, then update your AV program and do a virus check.
Also, run Ad-aware, Spybot, and CWShredder to remove any malware.
