I have CS installed on my computer and want to open PM6.5 files in INDY CS. So, I purchased the PM/INDY plug in software, thinking that this would help me. Well, it hasn't at all! When I open 6.5 files the object's (it's a typing "certificate") text/graphics are pixellated and print out as such.

What am I doing wrong?

InDesign does not require the Pagemaker plugin pack to open Pagemaker documents.

Were the images properly linked when they were in the Pagemaker format?

What warnings did InDesign give you upon opening the Pagemaker file?

What issues does InDesign display when you File>Preflight.

I have not had that problem. I just opened a P6.5 with text and images, to see if I could replicate your situation and could not.

Since it's only a 1 page doc, you might try copying and pasting the various elements and see if that helps.

When opening a pagemaker doc in Id, watch the warnings you get. Also make sure that the font used in the PM doc is available for ID.

Thanks for the replies, both of you.

First, no images were linked; the images were part of the 6.5 file.

Second, there were no warnings upon opening the file in 6.5.

Third, here are the preflight results: the 6.5 image had one embedded image with no missing images. There were three fonts used, none missing.

I'm still stumped. I can send you the PM6.5 file--it's a "certificate," the type used on schools/organizations and it's 622KB.

Thanks,

STeve

This is the entire problem. InDesign does not handle the embedded images the same way that Pagemaker did. It turns them into low res TIF files on conversion from PMD/P65 to INDD documents.

You should have linked your images in Pagemaker before bringing it to InDesign.

Embedding images has always been a bad idea in Pagemaker. The results are shown now when you try to open in InDesign.

Go back and re-link.

Jim,

The PM6.5 file has, as you know, an embedded graphic (I don't know if it's a tiff file or not). It's a template file that I received as a part of a workbook from a 6.5 book, so if you know of a way to separate the graphic from PM, please tell me. Maybe I could use PS?

Thanks for your reply,

STeve

If you make a pdf, you can open that in Photoshop to get rid of the text. Then save as a tiff.

You might then try copying and pasting any text.

Thanks, Jim.

I'll give it a shot tomorrow and let you know.
