trouble with doorphones and DOC

I installed 2 Norstar doorphones and 1 door opening controller (DOC) today, and well I got one doorphone to work, (I didn't test the second, no time) and the the DOC to flicker every second. Once I connected the two I got a steady light on the DOC. I am connecting the DOC to a gate and once connected the gate it opened and would not close. When I removed a "piece" of the puzzle, the gate closed. Any thoughts?

Disconnect all but the door phone DN pair, program and then start adding services one at a time. Make sure you have not reversed polarity and are getting proper voltage to the opening solenoids.
