I get this message:
The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain. For more information about using the Adprep, see Active Directory Help.

"The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer."

BUT:
I'm trying to add a win2k3 server to a win2k3 AD running in native mode.
I have run adprep /forestprep & /domainprep, but both say that the domain and forest are already updated.
I checked for stale metadata with ntdsutil, but there is none.
There are two existing DCs and replication is functioning.

Any ideas?

Service Pack issue? Are they all on the same SP? I can't see that as being an issue, but I'd check it out anyways.

maybe that's it, they are all SP1 but the new one I'm trying to add is R2. Would that cause a problem with AD? In the meantime I'm getting both existing DC up to date on patches (4 missing)

figured it out, win2k3 server R2 has an updated adprep on the second disk under cmpnents/r2/adprep. Running this upgraded AD to version 31. I will now try to add the new DC.

If the new one is R2, then you need to run adprep from the R2 disk. That will update the schema to version 31 (from 30, I believe).

that is correct, and it did infact solve my problem

Thank you very much!! I am having exactly the same problem now and finding out why this happens when windows2003 R2 is set to configure additional DC on the existing windows2003 domain. I try to run from CD. Thanks!!!!!!
