Hello! A user has a WinXP workstation, Fujitsu fi4220C scanner and Adobe Elements installed. She used to scan a document containing two pages and save it as pdf. She used the default scanning software in Windows, she just selected pdf as the desired file format. All of a sudden she could not save as pdf anymore. She can only save scanning results as .jpg, .tif, .png or .bmp. Of course she can convert a jpg file into a .pdf, but it't not supposed to happen like this. And she'd also have to find an easy way to make one pdf-file from two images, because there originally is two sheets of paper. She's not at all familiar with tools like photoshop, so I can't really tell her to combine the two images first.

I have removed and re-installed the scanner with several drivers, I have made a repair installation of Adobe Elements, nothing works. I tried to tell Elements to get the material for a new pdf from the scanner, but i can't select the scanner, only files can be selected.

I can't imagine what has caused the "save as PDF" -option to disappear, it used to be there! Honestly! :)

Have you defragged the user's hard drive lately??? Also do a chkdsk c: to see if the drive has any errors.

I ask because I've had a similar problem with pdf creation from a scanning application. The application acted as tho the pdf was created, but the pdf file never showed up.

Fujitsu scanners are really nice. However they can be a real pain to get installed, esp. with the scanning and doc retrieval software we use. Usually the scanner shows up in the compatible list.

Thanks for the tips so far. It's Acrobat Elements. If I could make the scanner save two pages as one file, no matter what kind of an image file, it would solve half the problem.

It looks like the plug-ins do not talk to each other anymore.

Uninstall Elements, make sure that the directory is gone (some uninstalls keep stuff on the disk), run a registry cleaner to remove the references to Elements, and reinstall Elements. It won't hurt.

I agree with felixc and i feel certain your problem resides within the registry.

Personally i always do a manual registry edit after uninstalling a program and before a re-install of a program. But thats only because i ran into a huge problem a few times when using a software program to do the job. But in this case, with there bound to be other adobe references not related to adobe elements it would likely be wise to use a registry cleaner anyway.
I do think you need to try a registry edit in this case.

Good advice + great people = tek-tips

If you want the full range of scanning options and document management, you really need Acrobat Pro. It will create a PDF from just about any source - from a file, a scanner (single page or duplexed), webpages or even a screenshot in the clipboard using Print Scrn.

Thanks a million for your good ideas. The workstation was old and slow anyway, so we just bought a new pc and made a clean installation. Now it works. I'm convinced it was registry problem just as you suggested. Next time I'll know what to do. :)
