I already have one server running Win2000 Server set up as my PDC using Active Directory. I have a stand alone Win2K Server that I want to promote to a domain controller also. When I run dcpromo and start the Active Directory Wizard on the second server and select Additional domain controller for an existing domain, I enter the Administrator username and password and the Domain name and hit next. I get the following error:

"The wizard cannot gain access to the list of domains in the forest. This condition may be caused by a DNS lookup problem. For more information about troubleshooting common DNS lookup problems, please see the following Microsoft Web Site: The error is: The RPC Server is unavailable."

I went to that site and couldn't solve my problem. Also, I have trouble getting workstations running XP Pro or 2000 Pro to join the domain. It says the network path could not be found or something about the computer not having an account. I also can not get my stand alone computer to join the domain as a workstation. It is part of WORKGROUP for now. I don't know if any of this is relative to the problem I described or not. If anyone could tell me what settings in DNS, etc. on both the existing PDC and the stand alone should be I would greatly appreciate it. I really need help. Thanks a million in advance.

Are you able to resolve names on the LAN? Try pinging by name as well as IP and post back. Definately sounds like DNS probs... Thanks,

Matt Wray
