We have been having some trouble with clients logging onto the domain from their windows xp and windows 2000 stations. We are running a Windows 2000 server. The error message is as follows:

Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable, or because your computer account was not found. Please try again later. If this message continues to appear, contact your system administrator for assistance.

This happens on different computers at different times, but it usually happens once everyone is in the office and has logged into the server. Any suggestions? Could we be out of CALs?

I think you have hit the nail on the head :
)

Have you checked to see how many users have logged on and also check how many licenses you have?

Also have you checked the event viewer of the servers?

Well,

I restart the client computer and try to logon and it still logs on successfully. Now this might take 2-3 restarts and trials, but it works. I checked the event viewer and could not see anything. Also, how do you check to see the users that are logged on and how many CALs are being used? I have the server set up to check per seat for the clients.

You can check licenses within administrative tools and then licenses.
