Trouble installing

So I'm installing on a Debian system, and it tells me it can't find libreadline or zlib... both are installed, were automatically installed by dselect when I set the system up.

But I'm sure they're non-standard in some way... having trouble figuring this out though.

I found a couple libreadline files in /lib/ so I tried to set
--with-includes and --with-libraries, but to no avail, and I'm not having any luck finding the gzip installation.

Any help much appreciated, in the meantime I'm going to attempt to disable these and install.

Thanks,
Rob

Sorry, getting tired, please replace gzip with zlib in the above post.

you are trying to compile postgre on debian, am I right?

so I'm not sure, but zlib1g and zlib1g-dev are the packages that must be installed

(why don't you use just the packages provided by debian?)

if it's not the problem give a little more info about what actually you are doing

You're right, I just figured out I need the zlib1g-dev to get the .h file for it to work. Go figure, when compiling you need the header files, not the compiled binaries.

That is what I'm doing... I'm mostly trying to learn the ins and outs of PostgreSQL, that's why I'm doing it from source.
