Trouble Importing word doc that uses headers and footers

I am having a hard time getting a word file that contains headers and footers to import correctly into indesign cs2. The simple solution would be to edit the headers and footers to be part of the page in word. This however is going to be a 500-600 page manual so that would be very time consuming. The first few pages of this particular file import correctly but as soon as indesign encounters the first footer it starts to lose its word formatting. If anyone knows how to embed the headers and footers in the word doc that would be ideal I guess. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

As far as I know, headers and footers will not import into ID. Far more sensible would be to set up the headers and footers on master pages (probably one per section if the H?F changes with each section) within ID itself.
