Trouble importing Word 2000

I''m a "by-the-seat-of-my-pants" PageMaker user with very little formal training, so be patient with me, please!

I am currently using PageMaker 6.5+. A co-worker submits contributions to some of my publications via e-mail using Microsoft Word 2000. The "hard returns" (is this the right term?) become paragraph breaks instead of line breaks when converted to PageMaker. The result is a "double space" effect everytime a new line is started. (A true double space becomes a "quadruple space.&quot

Am I doing something wrong, is there something I can do to eliminate this problem, or is this a glitch I have to live with?

A correct transformation from Word to PM cannot be expected.
It´s better to ask contributors for text in the formats TXT or RTF.
There may be some repair facilities, using text styles, but in
the long run, the strategy "Import complete Word document in PM"
is not recommended, IMO.
Word Export to PDF is an alternative, but PDF cannot be edited.
