hi,
could anyone help me. This is probably so easy that you are laughing at me.

I establish connectivity to my server using Client for netware networks and can see my server and tree, ie just the stuff built into XP but when I load Novells client software v 4.9 for XP I totally lose connectivity.

Can anyone help me out with this?

thanks

HAHAHAHA. ROFL. LMAO. My Side Hurts.. :)) :)) :))

Just kidding. Actually, you need to make sure that when you install the Novell Client v4.9, that you install IPX & IP. By default, only IP is installed. To do this, do a custom install and then select the correct option from the next screen. Make sure you DON'T select "IPX COMPATIBILITY" as it isn't what you want. You want straight IPX.

This is a very common problem with the 4.9 client because Novell changed the defaults since their last client release. The reason you need IPX is because NetWare 4.11 only works with IPX for client requests. Also, the reason the Microsoft Client for NetWare works is because it uses IPX also.

Thanks so much marvin. It worked a treat.

Can I ask you one more question?

When I log on with my Netware account admin password, it won't let login to windows. Another window pops up and I have to log onto windows locally first as the local admin for the XP workstation and then log in using my Netware admin password to access resources.

Is this correct? Does everyone have to log in twice?

P.S

Happy holiday season to you and may good karma follow you into the new year

regards

chris

As far as the two logins, that's just the way XP works. The best way to make it livable is to create local accounts that match the novell accounts. Then make sure the passwords are the same on each. That way, the novell login credentials are passed to XP and it's more transparent. It's not perfect and it's a common topic for discussion. Honestly, there are probably other people out there that have better ways to work around it. I deal more on the back end and don't work much with clients.

Happy Holidays to you, too.. and everybody else :)
