An XP box has a blank screen at bootup with one long beep followed by three or four short beeps. But the user could sign in using keyboard and hear the windows startup music.

tested with a known working video card and the monitor also works on another box. but the box just doesn't seem to supply video singnal to the monitor because the little light on the monitor goes from orange to green and then to orange.

packet sniffing also found that the box fetches these files:

each time when it boots up. anyone knows what's happening here?

Gator is spyware. While it is obnoxious I doubt it alone would stop your monitor.

I suspect malware or a virus is also involved in this computer.

See if you can get to the BIOS. Some recent viri overwrite the BIOS on the system and/or your hard disk controller. If you cannot access the BIOS you may have to reflash it to get the machine to start.

After starting you want to do a very thorough anti-virus run, an anti-trojan run with SpyBot or similar software: and then run Lavasoft's AdAware:
But to be honest, I think after repairing/resetting the BIOS I would clean format the disk and reinstall.

thanks! we took the battery out and unplugged the power. after a few hours we turned on the power, the screen came back! so the cmos was changed. we will reformat the disk and reinstall everything.

I am so pis**ed off at this Spyware and Virus crap!, Anyone who wants to write these types of garbage time stealing programs can go to HE**!!!

Shame on you AS*HOL*S!

Sorry people, I get so frustrated at this subject.
Sometimes you have to vent!

gben,

I now it is a trastic step, but a clean install is exactly what I would do in your place.

Best wishes,
Bill
