OS = Win98 Software Norton System Works 2003. My AV software has detected a Trojan horse (no specific name). Quarantine and repair have failed on multiple attempts. Symantec Knowledge base describes instructions for removal however after shutting down, disconnecting power for 30 seconds and rebooting in Safe Mode (as instructed), I receive the message Norton Anti Virus cannot find task. So I can't run the scan in safe mode. Cannot find support on the Symantec site for "what if safe mode doesn't work". The infected file is srvreg.exe and is located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. I sent a copy of the infected file to SARC their helpful reply was that it was unrecoverable and suggested I delete it and replace it with an uninfected file(didn't mention how). I searched my WIN98 installation disc but can't find the file srvreg.exe. The first time the virus was detected, it was quarantined and immediately shut down my computer, I had to disconnect power for 30 sec's to reboot and had to instruct Antivirus to ignore it in order to boot my machine at all since it wouldn't boot without the file rsvreg.exe. The symptoms of the virus are also odd. When I open certain programs or if I try to fix the registry through Norton Utilities my computer shuts down and must be disconnected to be rebooted. Have spent hours researching this and haven't seen this particular problem. If I am being redundant I appologize. Any help is appreciated.
