My buddy had his widows fry, he was happy with Windows 3.11 for quite a while.

I thought of moving him to Linux, but last time I checked, two years ago, even the so- called desktop Caldera and Corel installs defaulted to all sorts of servers and active ports and no firewall.

Dumb for an end user: lessee, email the friends, drink a beer, browse the web, drink a beer, write a letter and oh, yeah, admin SendMail for the 20,000 users, check the users' space allocations and get install that Apache sec. patch. Doh!

I can't find a HOW TO or checklist for cleaning up Linux default intalls for an end user.

Any pointers?

I was thinking of SuSe 8, personal not professional, as personal has less to uninstall.

If the last time you checked was two years ago check again! All distros would have come a long way in that time.

I use Redhat and Slackware but for an end user I think Redhat, Mandrake or Suse would be fine.

I can't comment on the others but a desktop install of redhat doesn't give you too much in the way of server related stuff these days.

Hope this helps. [smurf]

Thanks Hads, will do. SuSe is supposed to arrive in a few days. Back to HOWTOs. J
