Trimming leading 0 in varchar field

I am trying to create a stored procedure that will take an 18 character field that is padded with 0 (zero's) and remove them and update the field with the new value.. I have tried to use ltrim and rtrim to no avail... I know it can be done I just cannot find the right syntax...Thanx in advance...Tavie
