Hi,
I have an IRIX system that I needed to reset the root password to. I went into the shadow file and cleared out the encrypted password. Now when I try to change the password from the shroot command line it gives me an error. passwd: Cannot find name for input
Also, when I boot up the machine and try to log in as root from the GUI, the password box doesn't come up, only a pop-up that tells me that I can't login to the account.
Something that's strange to me is that when I go back into the shroot and edit the /etc/shadow file by putting a *LK* (to lock the account) in the place of an encrypted password of root, then reboot, I get the password box back on the GUI but of course I can't log in because the account is locked.
What am I missing? I know in Solaris, you can edit the /etc/shadow file and remove the encrypted password to reset the root password. I'm not sure what's going on here, but any help would be greatly appreciated!
