Any trick to getting a Seagate Travan 3401A drive operational on SCO 5.0.7?
I know,... I know... SCSI is the way to go. Believe me, I tried. But the Client saved some bucks on hardware and will be paying for it in support costs for years to come.

I added the tape using mkdev tape and answered the questions about IDE Primary/Slave. The O/S sees the drive and properly announces the make/model/firmware rev. But, I get "tape write error" with tar, and the following in the /usr/adm/messages file:

WARNING: wdRdWrData(unit 1) read overrun: requested 6, got 14 words
NOTICE: Stp: Error on SCSI tape 0 (ha=0 bus=0 id=1 lun=0)
Illegal request

This is the info from "hwconfig -h" for the device:
tape - - - type=IDE unit=0 ctlr=pri cfg=slv dvr=Stp->wd
Stp-0 - - - Vnd=Seagate Prd=STT3401A Rev=310B

Any help would be appreciated (as always).

Hi, I am having this exact same problem too. Did you manage to resolve it? Any help would be very much appreciated!!

TIA
Jason

I'd try to configure the Travan as master instead of slave.

Hope This Helps, PH.

Thanks PH, but I already tried that and still get the same result.

hwconfig -h | grep tape
tape - - - type=IDE unit=0 ctlr=pri cfg=mst dvr=Stp->wd

I get:
Jun 24 13:55:15 scosysv WARNING: wdRdWrData(unit 0) read overrun: requested 6, got 14 words

Instead of:
Jun 24 08:54:44 scosysv WARNING: wdRdWrData(unit 1) read overrun: requested 6, got 14 words

I also wondered if the tape drive might get upset by sharing a cable with something else so I disconnected the CD. Still the same!! It's driving me mad.....[mad]

I solved it by telling the Client to purchase a SCSI DAT drive. I beat on it for 3-4 hours and finally had to get on to other tasks.
I tried Master and Slave.
I tried mkdev tape with "Enhanced IDE" AND SCSI (using the wd driver). I think both of those eventually configure the kernel in a similar fashion.
I tried BRU (BackupRestoreUtility from Telios), which uses it's own drivers.
In almost all cases, I could access the tape drive, but could not write to tape.

If you (or anybody else) resolves this issue on 5.0.7, it would be good to post the solution here. For me, I'll try to stick with SCSI.

On 5.0.7 the wd driver has been updated at least once or twice, so the version of the wd driver should be noted.
eg wd ver 1.1.0a with MP1 loaded.

I don;t have any travan devices to try it with.
