I'm getting this error message popping up sporadically when trying to send out emails through several VB.Net applications. I can ping and connect to the mail server from the machine the applications run on and most of the time the applications send out mail just fine, but other times it throws this exception. Any ideas as why this would happen?

The network connection is fine. I can remote in, and have had the network admin look at this but he doesn't see anything that would be causing this problem. The only problem that I've come across is trying to send out emails and then it works over half the time.

Have you ever observed a problem connecting manually or with putty or telnet?

Have you tried wrapping the call in a recursive function to try it a few times in a row in case of failure? That would tell you if it is a short intermittent or long intermittent problem. You could log failures to get some idea of how long the problem lasts.

What error message are you getting, and what mail client are you using if any?
