Hello,
Try putting a clipping path on the photo in Photoshop. Then bring into Illustrator.

It depends on whether or not you want a soft edge or not. Clipping paths are the most reliable way, although it will give you a sharp cutout. If you don't want to do it in Photoshop, you can draw around the photo in Illustrator, select both the shape and the photo, then go to Object > Clipping Mask > Make (it might be slightly different in Illustrator 8, but it's more or less the same).

As for a 'soft' cutout, I don't think Illustrator 8 can do this easily (check the online help for 'Opacity Masks', although I don't think they were introduced until version 9). Failing that, try to add a matching background in Photoshop before placing it.

True, true... I don't believe transparency masks came along with the PSD by default until 9 or 10.

I haven't used 8 in ages... but if you have Effects > Document Raster Settings > Background (Set to Trans.)
and/or
Delete the background layer in PSD, leaving only the layer with transparency.
and/or
As above, make an Alpha layer (Channels) from a transparency selection of the layer (Ctrl+Click) layer, and ensure that you are are 'saving Alpha Channels' w/ SaveAs from PS.

Finally, read in the AI help how to (as I think it may be a manual operation in 8) add the Alpha channel as a mask to the image...? If you cannot add an Alpha channel mask, then you may be stuck with a clipping mask (vector) from PS.
In PS7 it's Layer > Enable Vector Mask > Hide all (and then drawing one to reveal... or vice versa (SHow all, draw to hide)

BTW, .Tiff also supports Alpha Channels, but it depends on Version of Photoshop.

Sef.

Not sure of AI 8 but in AI 10 and higher you can
Menu->File->open/place PSD files in AI document and they work seemlessly.

I loved the way this process was explained but when I have to place a duotone file psd format it simply doesn't work. Appears a message telling that the Illustrator doesn't support this format.
