What is the secret to creating transparent GIFs with Paint Shop Pro. Though I have been able to do it, the results are so grainy that they're not really usable. Any help would be appreciated.
GIFs are incredibly limited, as they can only work with 256 colors and do not have alpha transparency (which means that either the pixel is 100% opaque or 100% transparent) so all smooth lines that are in touch with the transparent areas will have a jagged look in the end because the smoothness comes from intermediate values between pixels.
You can use transparent PNG's, which do support alpha transparency and are supported by most modern Browsers. IE6 being the only exception.
You can also try to use the Export feature if you haven't done so. You can set some parameters that may help the look of the GIF.
File->Export-> Gif Optimizer.
